AUGUST RUNS

We were lucky enough to have three interesting runs in this month. Pete Howells’ Mid Wales Run took riders to Llyn Brianne on a new route which included more main road miles which was well received. Bill Bubb’s Midweek Run took us to the North Cotswolds via a new coffee stop with lunch at Toddington and a chance to see steam locos again. Lastly Mike Davies’ Herefordshire Bimble introduced us to different parts of Herefordshire with new venues for the lunch and tea stops. Many thanks to Pete, Bill and Mike for organising and leading these.

WORCESTER TT

The first run of this event for Tiddlers and Three wheelers was very successful and attracted a total of 17 entrants. Many thanks to Richard Caddick for organising this. A full report is available on the section website.

MOTORBIKES AT TUDOR HOUSE

This ever popular event is on again on Saturday 14th September 10.00am to 4.00pm at Tudor House

Friar Street, Worcester. Display your machine. All day – or just for an hour – to suit you.

MALVERN CLASSIC MOTORCYCLE SHOW

This section has for many years had a section stand at this twice yearly show. Over the years this show has had a declining numbers of trade stands, autojumblers and visitors. Several years ago Classic Shows could not justify a stand alone motorcycle show and so incorporated it into the Malvern Festival of Transport which we continued to support. The October show will again be in the Severn Hall which appears to me to be a much less suitable venue, The most recent show in April appeared to have very few visitors interested in bikes.

I have brought the stand equipment along for the last few years but am not prepared to do this any longer, We discussed this at the last committee meeting but there were no volunteers to carry on with it so at present there are no plans to have a section stand at the October Show.

VMCC GENERAL MEETING

The Board has decided to call a General Meeting of the Club on Sunday 27th October at the National Motorcycle Museum. Many members are concerned by the resignations of three Board Members in June, and have wondered what is going on, the Board have therefore decided that members should be given the opportunity to discuss what may have been going wrong. This Meeting will be asked to approve revisions to the Club’s Articles and Byelaws. Full details of the proposed changes will accompany the official Notice calling the meeting, which will be circulated in early October to provide the 21 days’ notice required by law.

It is also intended that the General Meeting should provide members with an opportunity to discuss the future of the Club’s Library and the issue of a possible transfer of the Club’s heritage collections to a

Trust, as outlined in the piece published in the September Journal. A fuller explanation of the meeting’s purpose can be found in the September SSNL on the section website.

OCTOBER MIDWEEK RUN

Richard Caddick writes:-

We are going for a new route this coming Thursday 17th October with a start at the Cob House cafe at 9.30am for 10am away. Our coffee stop will be at the Pea Green cafe in Ludlow just adjacent to the Police Station in Ludlow [SY8 1RZ] after 24 miles. We then cover a route via Bridgnorth to a lunch stop at The Royal Oak in Alveley [WV15 6LL] after 36 miles of mostly easy roads. The pub is famous for its carvery meals but also has a varied menu of specials to fill you up ! We then have another easy run of just 12 miles to a tea stop at The Collier’s Arms Cafe at Rock [DY14 9HA] where you can have your pudding or cake !! You will have covered 75 miles by then and are on the main A456 and should be able to find your way home easily.

I think the weather is going to be mixed this coming week but Thursday does not look too bad at the moment. Our October runs have been plagued with bad weather in previous years but let’s hope for it to be dry under wheel on the day, if not we can cope and there are no really tiny roads to negotiate on this route which can be where the mud lurks.

VMCC GENERAL MEETING

The Board has decided to call a General Meeting of the Club on Sunday 27th October at the National Motorcycle Museum. The club has posted these to 6500 members at an eye watering cost, if you have an email address please let the VMCC know. Don’t forget to do your democratic duty and vote.

NOVEMBER MIDWEEK RUN

This run on the 15th is organised by Richard Caddick and starts from the Market Square, Bromyard. The coffee stop is at the Nest, near Ledbury HR8 2PZ (on the A438 between the Verzons and the Trumpet). The lunch stop is at the Salutation Inn, Weobley, Herefordshire HR4 8SJ. The latter has a deal on for a Pie and a pint or Fish and Chips and a pint for £12.00 but you need to know this before you order your drinks !! The route is three hops of just over twenty miles each with a final tea stop at Burford House on the A456 near Tenbury. There are a couple of muddy sections but these are mostly on flat and straight roads just before the coffee stop so are not too challenging. Route sheets will be available on the day but if anyone is joining us on route please can they let Richard know if they would want to be included in lunch numbers. Last run of 2018, good forecast for Thursday, so no excuses!

MALVERN CLASSIC MOTORCYCLE SHOW

Held in the Severn Hall at Three Counties Showground on Sunday 14th October and again combined with the Malvern Festival of Transport. We again won the runner up award for club stands, there was only one other club stand. It was a day of continuous rain and mention must be made of four heroic members who came on motorcycles! Les Bennett, Howard Williams, Pete Howells and Gerald Griffiths, well done them. I would of course have come on a bike but my duties as secretary unfortunately meant that I had to use the car for the stand equipment. I think one of the four won a class award for their bike but can’t remember who, sorry.

FRANCIS GUY

As many of you will know Francis Guy died on 14th October. Francis had been a member of this section since its formation in 1995 and before that the old Hereford section. I first remember him on runs on a 1930’s Sunbeam, hand change and with a DIY air cleaner which consisted of a section of black tights stretched over the carburettor bell mouth. In recent years he produced the quiz which accompanied the fish and chip supper.

His funeral was on last Wednesday, many section members attended at a packed Broadheath church.

DES GRUBB

Members will be sorry to hear of the death of Des on May 18th. Des was a long standing member of this section and a regular at club nights and runs. He was a man of many interests as well as old motorbikes he entered vintage ploughing competitions with his Fordson Standard and trailed plough. He was also a musician and church organist. Rock on old friend!

Des’s funeral is on the 18th June at 1.00 p.m. at Wichenford Church and afterwards from 3.00 at The Cob House. Des’s brother Derek advises that there is very limited parking at the Church and that they are expecting a big turnout as Des was in numerous clubs. He said a cortege was not advisable because of the parking at the Church, but obviously there is plenty of room at the Cob.

VMCC CHAIRMAN

Members will be surprised to hear that local man Geoff McGladdery has resigned as chairman of the VMCC. He states as his reason for going that he had been unable to win the trust and backing of the Board and key staff members to implement his 3 year plan for the club. Bad news for the VMCC, I think, as Geoff had put an enormous amount of time and energy into producing the 3 year plan.

Geoff will remain chairman of the Herefordshire section and continue to run the popular ‘Herefordshire on the Edge’ event.

BRING AND BUY NIGHT

Do not forget that the August club night on the 12th will again be our ever popular Bring and Buy event. For the last five years I have made tedious remarks about getting rid of your junk and buying someone else’s so I won’t this year.

THE WORCESTER T.T.

On Sunday 1st September Worcester Section are running a Worcester T.T. [for Tiddlers, Three-wheelers and girder fork machines] Starting at The Cob House in Wichenford at 9.30 for 10.00am start. [Breakfast and coffee are available at the cafe from 7.30am] Trailers can be left on the car park if required. The route, over good roads, goes to the Larch Barn Cafe nr. Cleobury Mortimer for coffee and then either a slightly testing route for about three miles before you are back onto good roads for an 18mile ride to the lunch stop at The Rose and Crown in Burford Tenbury or a slightly shorter and easier route of about 12miles to the same lunch stop. A final run back to the Cob House giving a total run of some 50ish miles.

So if you have a little bike or a three wheeler or even a girder fork bike that needs a gentle run out then please come along on the day. All bikes needing a gentle run welcome anyway. (Richard Caddick)

RUN ORGANISERS

A look at the runs listed above for August and September shows that we are lucky enough to have no less than five different members prepared to give up their time to prepare new and interesting routes for us. Many thanks to Bill Bubb, Mike Davies, Pete Howells, Richard Caddick and Howard Williams for this.

IDEAS FOR 2020

Your dynamic and progressive committee have suggested the following new items for inclusion in the 2020 calendar:- A Saturday run to gauge members interest for this and an evening Fish and Chip Run to the Sun at Leintwardine (surely there is a chippy nearer!). Let us know if you have any ideas for activities for next year.

WHAT A CLANKER

My Guzzi recently developed an ominous clanking sound from the rear, turned out to be a worn out universal joint. Said joint was repaired promptly by Prop Tech at Hartlebury for 50 quid. Access to the drive shaft means removing the swinging arm complete with drive box, thanks to chairman Richard for helping me refit it.
